What is the difference between stress lines and premature wrinkles?
Q. I have three clear lines across my head which have been due to chronic stress. they have been going and getting worser for two weeks now. two people have mentioned that stress lines come and go when the stress goes, my stress is ongoing. i can't however find anything online abut 'stress lines' which makes me wonder if there is such a thing. Can someone show me where i can read up on stress lines because the only things i find are facial lines and wrinkles both of which can be caused by stress but are permanant, not temporary.

How do I stop stress from making me physically ill?
Q. I have found that when I get stressed, nervous, worried, tense, etc I start to get physically sick. Usually my stomach is what gets upset the most. This happens for all kinds of stress including: tests, relationship fights, big vacations, moving away from home, anything. I need to get over this, sometimes I even stress about getting sick from becoming stressed about becoming sick. Anyone have any ideas? This has been going on for years and I can't stand it anymore. yes anxiety is definitly apart of it.
Asked by Kelly - Sat Sep 29 17:15:14 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well you're saying it's stress, but is any of it anxiety? I know that alot of my "stress" is anxiety about things like you mentioned, tests, etc. and there are now alot of anti-anxiety medications you can get so that it won't cause the physical symptoms to exist or exist as badly as they are now. There are also many other things you can do to help you learn to deal with stress/anxiety so that it won't effect you as badly such as yoga, deep breathing, and anti-anxiety exercises. If you don't take care of this problem you will likely end up with stomach ulcers from the stress so please talk to your doctor.

Can severe stress seriously impact your mental functioning and to what degree?
Q. I have noticed increasingly lately that my concentration, memory, both short and long, ability to think and concentrate and functioning is notably impaired. I seem to be in one place but another in mind, never really with it and often finding myself not really listening to people even going into a trance and finding it hard to snap out of going into myself. I have been under a lot of mental stress lately, loss of someone close, generalised anxiety, became a new mum, moving house i could go on. Could this just be severe stress or could i be going mad?
Asked by Kelly27 - Thu Dec 10 14:24:13 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, absolutely severe stress can cause many issues. This certainly includes your mental functioning. Difficulty concentrating, lack of focus, grief issues ("lost someone close"), new mother, moving. Your stress is very high at present. Also generalized anxiety can be a separate issue or it could be connected with the stress you are experiencing. I do hope that you will consult your Dr or other health care provider to discuss these issues in depth. If you do have depression it is very amenable to treatment with the caution that treatment is more helpful the earlier you take yourself to your Dr. (many of the symptoms you mention are indicative of a depressive disorder). I wish you Blessings of Health, Julian of N

Is our reaction to stress genetically determined, or do we learn how to respond to stress by observing others?
Q. Is our reaction to stress genetically determined, or do we learn how to respond to stress by observing others in our culture by watching television and movies?
Asked by JLove - Thu Oct 2 15:21:50 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Our reaction to stress may be genetically predetermined. Such as one child in the family may respond to TV with manifestations of fear (afraid of the dark etc) other children may seem fine. One child may handle the stress of divorce totally different than another child. However, each can learn how to handle stress better. They may have to learn to avoid certain stimuli such as scary movies, arguing etc. As adults we face the same thing...if we didn't learn as children we have to learn as adults how to manage stress. What processes occur in the body during a period of critical stress?
Q. Can someone who knows this stuff please inform me on the processes that occur in the body during a period of severe stress. I have heard things like: stress makes you gain weight, stress makes you lose muscle mass, stress causes increased blood sugar levels, stress causes the breakdown of protein in the body and increased fat storage. However, I am not exactly sure how many of these are true and am interested in finding out the real facts behind stress.
Asked by Dennis L - Fri Jun 27 19:30:23 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Stress slows down metabolism, causing all the fat and weight problems, and an increase of blood sugar occurs because your body is using up more energy. Stress decreases your immune system response, causing other problems. It also raises blood pressure.

A. Stress treatments appear in section 42 at ezy build, below. A certain level of stress is unavoidable, in modern society, so it is a good idea to develop effective coping methods. Light to moderate daily exercise combats stress. For some people, it helps to visualise a quiet, relaxing scene (imagine, as vividly as you can, that you are on a tropical beach, reclining comfortably; you luxuriate, as the the sun warms you, and a gentle breeze caresses your skin lightly, inhaling the tangy, sea scented, salt laden spray from the sparkling, translucent, aqua waves, crashing on the white, coral beach sand, and feeling the hot sand slip through your fingers in one hand, sipping your favorite drink with the other; all the while, the seagulls call,… [cont.]

A. Go for lots of walks, and make her a cup of chammomile tea. Less sugar, less coffee. Good nutrition, calcium. Plenty of Omega 3's. There are many good books written - but I would find a good one written by an MD who also knows some natural remedies, and I would give her the book to read. Be kind to her, maybe watch some funny movies - laughing is the best medicine. She also could maybe use a doctors appt., or have someone to talk to whose opinion matters to her. Good luck, she is lucky to have someone to care about her like you do! I wouldn't nag her about the smoking, she probably feels bad enough about it as it is, and that would just add to the stress. A. WOW! you have a big family! I have 4 of my own also and 3 step-children... Take a long warm bubble bath, turn the lights off, lock the door and light some candles. Then eat a big bowl of your favorite ice cream. Try to ignore the turmoil (I know, easier said than done)and really just try to relax!!! If there is someone you can talk to, that might help too. How do you handle stress at work, especially customer service?
Q. I work in a customer service job and there's a lot of stress, especially lately. Does anyone have suggestions how to handle the stress in customer service to keep from losing it
Asked by Zat - Sat May 9 03:31:28 2009 - - 10 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I used to work in a customer service position in a complaint center, 10 hour days and it can be extremely stressful. I eventually had to quit because I just couldn't take it anymore. You have to learn not to take it personally when someone on the line is very rude and insulting to you. You have to let each call go. Try to put a smile on your face and offer the best customer service you can. If it is being too hard for you, maybe this is not the right job for you. Good luck.

A. I work as a child psychologist and my husband works as a family doctor and he's very busy, he has long days and he's stressed out. He works 5-6 days a week at a clinic in our city and he works about 10 hours a day. But what my husband does that is good, is that he leaves his work at work. When he's at home, we don't talk about our work..we just focus on our family and daughter. He sees a lot of patients and the hardest for him is to break bad news to someone ( such as cancer ). I think that would be hard for anyone. And his days are very very long. But he makes a great salary and we both live very comfortably. But some clinics can offer you flexible hours but that's something you'll have to look into.

What are some ways to handle stress related nausea?
Q. I have had stress-related nausea for several months now. The job that I work at is in sales and it is very high stress. They fire people in front of the rest of the employees and sometimes they have unreal expectations. I find that during these times in particular I feel like I have to throw up, but I'm not able to throw up. I've tried drinking ginger ale and it doesn't seem to help at all. Drinking peppermint tea seems to help, as well as Pepto Bismol. I'd like to know, though, if there's any way to prevent this feeling sick all together without losing my job. Any suggestions?

What can you do to reduce stress during an average work day?
Q. I work for a software company and spend 8 to 10 hours a day behind a computer. Along with deadlines, meetings, and other factors, an average day can create stress. What can be done, either at the desk or in the chair, etc., to help reduce the stress?

A. Try to be conscious of your breathing. Breathe with your abdomen not your chest, so when you inhale your tummy goes out, and when you exhale your tummy pushes the air up and out. Slowly in thru the nose, slowly out thru pursed lips. Let all the tension go. This is called calmative breathing. We tend to chest-breathe when we're stressed or nervous. You get a lot more oxygen when you breathe with your abs. Also be aware of your shoulders. We tend to hike them up when we're stressed. Pull them back down. Down and back. If you're sitting at a desk all the time, definitely do some stretches. Roll the shoulders slowly in big backward circles, then in forward circles. To stretch your neck, look straight ahead, inhale, then gently tilt your… [cont.]

Q. I've come acorss a problem, this is what i'm faced with. A hollow steel tube has an external diamater of 100mm and a 80mm internal diamater, it is 3m long, and is subjected to a tensile load of 400kN. The stress of the tube needs to be calculated, and also, how much would the tube stretch if Youngs Modulus is 200 000 N/mm . Thanks very much! Any help will be extremely appreciated. Sam Lilley

A. = stress = force/area force = 400kN area = [(100mm)^2 - (80mm)^2] /4 = (400kN) / (900 mm^2) = 444 N/mm^2 = strain = stress/youngs = /E = (444 N/mm^2) / (200,000 N/mm ) = 0.00222 m/m stretch = length stretch = 3m 0.00222 stretch = 0.0067m = 6.7mm

What are good ways to relieve stress while preparing for a camping trip?
Q. Me and my husband go camping three to four times during the summer. I always seem to get really stressed out right before the trip. There is just some much to do, packing, cooking, etc. The stress seems to put a negative spin on the trip. It takes me a while to relax once we get out there. A. Store as much as you can already packed. We keep 2 'camping tubs' ready to go- one for the kitchen, one for everything else (tarps, stakes, lantern, ax, games, rope, spare toiletries, etc.. Everything was washed after last use, and packed so it does not get smelly or nasty between uses. Some is in plastic bags, some wrapped in paper, etc. Checklists lay on the top of the stuff ready for a quick review. The checklists note the things that might have an expiration date, and what we need to add- like food. The tent, sleeping bags, etc. are stored in loose pillowcases between trips, and go into their own duffel bags when it is time to go. Streamline personal stuff. Each person has 2 duffel bags- one holds their sleeping bag, sheet, sleeping… [cont.]
