A reagent is a "substance or compound that is added to a system in order to bring about a chemical reaction or is added to see if a reaction occurs". Such a reaction is used to confirm the presence of another substance. Examples of such analytical reagents include Fehling's reagent, Millon's reagent and Tollens' reagent.

Although the terms reactant and reagent are often used interchangeably, a reactant is more specifically a "substance that is consumed in the course of a chemical reaction". Solvents and catalysts, although they are involved in the reaction, are usually not referred to as reactants. In organic chemistry, reagents are compounds or mixtures, usually composed of inorganic or small organic molecules, that are used to affect a transformation on an organic substrate. Examples of organic reagents include the Collins reagent, Fenton's reagent, and Grignard reagent.

In another use of the term, when purchasing or preparing chemicals, reagent-grade describes chemical substances of sufficient purity for use in chemical analysis, chemical reactions or physical testing. Purity standards for reagents are set by organizations such as ASTM International. For instance, reagent-quality water must have very low levels of impurities like sodium and chloride ions, silica, and bacteria, as well as a very high electrical resistivity.

An aqueous reagent is used in the making of an ester (an organic compound formed by the reaction of an alcohol and carboxylic acid together), it is used to remove impurities from the impure product. It is subsequently removed using a separating funnel to leave an organic layer which contains the ester.

What do natural reactants have to do with equilibium?
Q. I have an assignment asking how do certain factors affect equilibrium. This is my topic, and I can't find anything on it. Are natural reactants the reactants in equilibium? Are there any good sites that would have the answer?
Asked by lukki - Mon May 5 18:22:12 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Equilibrium is making everything balanced. Natural reactants have to occur in order for things to stay in balance or in more scientific terms, homeostasis. If you dont have natural reactants, then everything would be all over the place and there would be chaos. Example: If your Immune System didnt automatically react when a microbe enters the body, you can get sick a lot. Hope I helped! =)

A. um, balance the equation? are you talking about in an experiment? they will always be equal by the law of conservation of mass.

How do you find the products of the reactants?
Q. I have looked through the Chemistry book but it does not tend to explain if there is a method of finding products with just the reactants by figuring out which atom will want to associate with which atom to produce tehse products.

A. Well...i have been studying chemistry for like 4 years ...n there is basically no way out of this problem ..you will just have to mug up the answers :(
